We all know that mammograms are painful, but what else do you know? Do you know any alternatives to detecting breast cancer early?
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I want to discuss mammograms, but this won’t be what you expect.
As a new mom under 40 years old, I have never been in the line to receive a mammogram. I’m not sure what age the docs start to recommend it, but I’ve never had one.
My Familiarity With Breast Cancer
Breast cancer reared its ugly head in my family many years ago. My maternal grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1990’s, and following treatment, she had one of her breasts removed. I didn’t know what caused her cancer, but I refuse to accept the redundant medical answer: We just don’t know.
After much research, as I always do, I discovered several facts about the mammogram process, and I’d like to share it with you.
4 Things You Didn’t Know
#1 – Mammograms might be able to help screen for and detect breast cancer in some cases, but they do not treat cancer, nor do they help prevent or treat breast cancer (in fact, the opposite might be true).
#2 – Mammograms are less accurate in women with denser breast tissue; usually women under the age of 40 years old mammograms are useless.
#3 – Mammograms have been giving false positives and causing women to be misdiagnosed and overdiagnosed with breast cancer.
#4 – Mammography uses dangerously high levels of radiation, which can cause breast cancer.
Is Breast Cancer Inevitable?
So what am I saying here? If a person a does not have breast cancer, but is getting regular mammogram check ups, eventually cancer might be inevitable. It’s a sad reality that we live in, but there are more and more people getting breast cancer, yet no one seems to know why. Radiation clearly is known to cause cancer, and mammograms use very high levels of radiation. So just pause… and think about that for a moment. You go in to get screened, to make sure you’re healthy, and after several years of mammograms and being cancer free… suddenly you have breast cancer? There’s got to be a better way.
A Safer Alternative
I want to inform you about another option – a SAFER alternative – to mammograms, and that is thermography. What is thermography? Thermography is a state-of-the-art, and potentially life-saving, method of detecting cancer by using thermal imaging. The technology used to perform thermograms is considered one of the most reliable for risk assessment and detection, especially in the case of breast cancer — as opposed to potentially cancer-causing mammograms.
Thermography is performed as a 15-minute non-invasive test — there is no compression, radiation or contact involved, in comparison to mammograms. Mammography is rather invasive, painful compression, and uses dangerous radiation. Although I’ve never had a single mammogram, every woman I know, including my mom, has told me they are painful and wish they didn’t have to get them. Well if you’re like them, you can put your mind at ease to discover there is something painless, more affordable, zero radiation that can potentially cause cancer, and can detect breast cancer 8 years sooner than mammograms.
